My Top Studio Photoshoot Ideas
FROM AN NYC PHOTOGRAPHER
As much as we sometimes wish it did, life doesn’t just come to a stop once the cold winter months hit… people still go to work, hang with friends, and have huge life moments that are worth celebrating!
It may seem difficult to have your perfect engagement photoshoot or branding session when the trees outside are lifeless and there are icy sidewalks to be navigated, but there are SO many options for you…if you don't know where to start, that’s where I come in!
The winter months are such a fun time to get inspired, be creative, and try something new… have you ever thought about a studio session?
These sessions are some of my FAV because you get SO much creative freedom, stay warm, have great natural light, and the best part….don’t have to worry about any crowds!!
Here are some of my favorite ideas for your next studio session:
Make sure your studio has TONS of natural light!!
Natural light is always a top tip when it comes to photography, but it’s a little easier to come by when outdoors (hello caption obvious). So, when you’re choosing to shoot indoors, natural light is really the MOST important factor to ensure quality photos.
Make sure the studio you pick has large windows (I LOVED the windows at this studio in Brooklyn)…even better if you can snag some direct sunlight! Shadows from window panes are always so fun to play with.
2. Utilize movement…you have the space!!
Right up there with staying warm during the colder months comes…SO. MUCH. SPACE.
I always find that people really come into their own and are their truest selves when we have a studio session. Especially in NYC, its easy to feel like people are watching and judging you while having your photos taken (even though I can guarantee you they don’t think twice about it). In a studio, it’s just you and me, baby!! We can make as much noise as we want, run around and move as much as we want, and just have FUN without having to worry about anyone else.
3. Props are typically available (and so fun)!!
There’s no need to buy new furniture or rent out an entire Airbnb to have an aesthetic and homey feel to your photos…studios typically have many different props and seating options that add variety to your photos!!
When booking a studio, just be sure to read the fine print and see what’s included. If you have a way to transport your own furniture/props, you could do that too!!
4. Unlimited & easy outfit changes!!
We’ve allll been there…trying to change outfits in your car, a gas station restroom, or behind a sheet held up by your bestie. SO we all know….that sucks haha.
With studios, you have your own private space to change (either in the studio itself or most should have nice restrooms for you). A lot of studios even have a clothing rack and hangers so you can get your outfits all lines up and ready to go!!
5. Easily accommodate larger groups!
Let’s face it, sometimes corralling a larger group of people with all the noise and distractions in a public space is difficult…it’s also harder to do dynamic group poses that add some pizazz to the session!
Studio sessions with a big group are always sooo much fun! It’s really more like a fun game of dress up with your closest people…don’t forget to blast the music and add in some dancing!!
